FAQ ABA India

This is in response to the innumerable queries sent to ABA India from those who want to pursue "Applied Behavior Analysis" as a profession.

Is behavior analysis a subject different from psychology ?
Yes. Behavior Analysis is a subject which has a separate curriculum of study.

Where have behavior analysts in India studied ?
All behavior analysts in India who are certified by BACB (Behavior Analyst Certification Board) are studying ABA from foreign universities.

Can I study ABA in India ?
As of now there are no ABA education opportunities in India.

What does studying ABA entail ? / How do I get Certified ?
You need to do a specified set of course work hours which may be at Bachelors or Masters level. Which means you can do your Masters in ABA or Bachelors in ABA.

Alternatively, you can opt to choose course sequences after Graduation or Post-graduation, which completes BACB requirements to be eligible for BACB examination.

Along with this you need to clock clinical hours under a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. You have to complete 1500 hours of clinical work for BCBA and 1000 hours for BCaBA requirements. Of these clinical hours you have to mentor for 5% of your clinical hours under a BCBA.

What is BACB ?
BACB is Behavior Analyst Certification Board. It is an International body based in USA which sets standards for certification of Behavior Analysts. It conducts an exam for students who have completed their ABA study and competed mentoring hours. BACB certifies at 3 levels.
BCBA-D (Board Certified Behavior Analyst – Doctoral )
BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst)
BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst)
See www.bacb.com

Why is BACB so important ?
Just the way doctors who passed the FRCS exam have a certain standing in their field, due to the knowledge and experience, similarly BACB sets stringent criteria for being called Behavior Analysts. Only those who pass the exam after full filling its criteria are Certified by the Board after an exam.

Do we have BACB exams in India ?
Yes we have 4 centers at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore

Once I am BCBA or BCaBA do I have to do anything more ?
All BCaBA’s have to continue mentoring under BCBA’s. They need to have one contact hour / month with their mentor.

BCBA-D, BCBA & BCaBA also have to collect CEU’s as per BACB regulations, which means they have to continue to study, present papers, and be up-to date with latest research in the field. See www.bacb.com

I have been working under a BCBA for the past 6 months and will begin my course next year, will my clinical hours be counted ?
Clinical hours as per BACB guidelines can be counted only after you begin your ABA course under a BACB approved University. See www.bacb.com

What is the role of a BCBA mentor ?
A mentor / supervisor’s role is to ensure that the application of ABA principles are as per BACB task list and guidelines.

Who do I contact for more information?
You may contact anyone listed on the ABA India website, or look up the “certificant registry” on www.bacb.com for more information.
